On the sources. These stages follow the accounts commonly taught from Ibn Hisham and Ibn Kathir. Nothing is put into the mouth of the Prophet ﷺ or of any companion, and the dates are the usual approximations.
The first revelation
The Prophet ﷺ had been withdrawing to a cave on the mountain outside Makkah to be alone and to reflect. There the angel Jibril came to him with the first words of the Qur'an, the command to read in the name of his Lord who created. He returned to his home shaken, and his wife Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her, covered him and reassured him, then took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal, who recognised what had come to him.
